So to understand internet marketing we will break marketing down to its core to simplify it as much as possible.  Before the internet and big national brand stores if you had a product you would like to sell how would you sell that item? Well to be frank you would take that physical item “to the market” lol you would literally take it to the physical market in town. Why? Because that’s where people are that want to buy! So marketing in its basic form is getting something you would like to sell in front of people that want to buy!

Now take that simple term and add the internet to it. Bam, internet marketing. There are several simple markets already established like Facebook marketplace, Amazon FBA, eBay, and Craigslist. All are hosted markets ready for you to upload your items (or mail them in) for sale. These are also sites I’m sure you visit when you are looking for something to buy! So to be clear getting something you want to sell in front of somebody looking to buy is marketing. The part where you give a “sales speech” is part of the sales process but that is defined as “sales copy”! AKA “copywriting” There is a ton of psychology behind these and it requires market research. Internet marketing is divided into two distinct categories. Items that are physical. These would be things you would list on Amazon, eBay, Facebook, or Craigslist. You would have to physically deliver the item or ship it. A lot of people today are using a method called drop-shipping, where you actually don’t have the item in hand but have a supplier that’s willing to ship it to whatever address you request. You list the item on a website and when someone buys you put the order in with the supplier. Profit margins are carved out by whichever marketplace you choose fees. Getting big profits with this model is very difficult although very real and possible. The second is digital. This is where the buyer will download the item they just purchased. This would either be some kinda entertainment or knowledge product like an eBook, pdf file, or video file. Marketing and selling your own published content is by far the most profitable business on the internet. The potential you have with this mind blowing!

What makes internet marketing the greatest opportunity of the century is you can create your own market! When you have your own digital space that people can visit online and people can buy from you! Get this, you are not bound by any limitation like actually physically being there for the sale to take place. The amount of people that can see your item for sale is virtually limitless and additionally, the amount of buyers can be virtually limitless. You can sell to the whole world if you like! Additionally, the overhead costs are much different. To have a physical store you have to rent a space or own it. Online all you need is web hosting which is a fraction of the cost! If you use an online market that’s owned by someone else they are pulling these fees out of each transaction. But if you own your own space the costs go down even further. Now you see what kind of opportunity we are talking about!

As we speak the opportunity gap has widened even further! Ever since the covid lock downs traditional brick and motor stores sales have dropped dramatically and some of them have gone out of business. Just look around your own hometown. How many buildings that were once thriving businesses are empty shells? However, the pendulum has swung the other way. The buyers didn’t just disappear they went online. Web-based shopping has flourished. The big takeaway is more people than ever before are used to making online purchases and more and more people have made their first online purchase making buying anything online the customary practice of our society.  The frequency of online sales is going through the roof right now!
